The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru offers plenty of red cherry and crushed strawberry on the pastille-like bouquet. The oak is nicely integrated if not overly complex. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, and rather foursquare. You might describe the finish as "dour". It just needs more joie-de-vivre and flesh. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Cask sample. Lightish crimson. Delicate dark-red fruit. A little more savoury and meaty on the palate. Tight, chewy and fresh. Balanced, correct, perhaps not a standout. (JH)

The 2016 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur includes around 25% new oak and 60% whole bunch fruit. This was not touched by the frost, so it recorded a normal harvest. It has a perfumed and quite floral bouquet, slightly darker fruit than the Combottes, nicely defined with a subtle oyster shell influence coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fleshy and clearly with more depth and "rondeur" than the Combottes. There is fine tension here, quite precise, not long but there is satisfying depth and presence.
