Score 90/100 · Drink 2024-2040, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Apr 2022

Exhibiting aromas of cherries, raspberries, licorice and loamy soil, the 2019 Simard is medium to full-bodied, ample and lively, with a rich core of fruit, succulent acids and a saline finish. This 40-hectare vineyard, situated on sandy soils on the plain, has been in the Vauthier family since 1950. It's not offered en primeur, but rather sold with a bit of bottle age.

The 2019 Simard has a pretty bouquet of brambly red fruit, light floral scents and a touch of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, and balanced, if just a tad conservative on the finish. It has an easy-drinking ambience about it. Fine.

The 2019 Simard is soft, fruity and accessible, all of which make it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next 10-15 years. Pretty floral top notes perk up the red/purplish berry fruit. This is nicely done.

70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Barrel sample. Similar in colour and weight to Fonbel but with more of a meaty, earthy edge to the fruit. Juicy and fresh but a little dour on the finish. (JL)

Owned by the Vauthier family, who also own Ch. Ausone, this large Saint-Emilion estate is the entry-point to the Vauthier range. It is an excellent introduction to the family’s wines and great value, offering an earlier-drinking style.
