The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru is blended with the three usual climats plus Les Champonnet. This uses 80% whole bunches and one-third new oak. The nose is quite reduced when I tasted it (this wine has not been racked), though the palate is taut and ripe, the stems neatly assimilated, though it just lacks a bit of verve and complexity on the finish.

This year, the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru includes Champonnets, and Mortet tells me that it was largely processed by hand, with the clusters cut up and only the berries on their pedicels retained. Exhibiting aromas of sweet berries, orange rind, warm spices and vine smoke, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless, with a perfumed core of fruit, powdery tannins and an expansive finish.

This estate, today with Arnaud Mortet at the helm, makes some of Gevrey-Chambertin’s finest wines. Working with 16 hectares, as well as a few négociant parcels, this property makes perfumed and chiselled Pinot Noir.
