Deep youthful crimson. Ripe rather intriguing, clean fruit. Neat fruit, a little touch of rusticity but not overpoweringly so. Slightly dry tannins on the finish. But a good, convincingly bright package before that. Quite a vibrant wine. Though not terribly long and with quite marked acidity. (JR)

I was surprised by the tart acidity of the 1998 Cornas, but there is no doubting its concentration. Although made in a savage, unevolved, tannic manner, it reveals an admirable black fruit character and ripe Syrah style. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2012. Medium ruby-red, not quite as dark as the Saint-Joseph. Crystallized black raspberry and spice on the pure, aromatic nose. Concentrated, firmly built and quite suave, with harmonious acidity framing the dark berry and pepper flavors. Generous, expansive and impeccably balanced, but not longer than the Saint-Joseph. Finishes with ripe, dusty tannins. This may well shut down in the bottle.
