Score 87/100 · Drink 2018-2022, Neal Martin, Sep 2018

The 1970 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has what you might call a “respectable” bouquet with simple earth and leather aromas, vestiges of red fruit but they dissipate with time. The palate is nicely balanced and seems to have matured, or rather survived better than the aromatics. Christophe Roumier remarked that this vintage was over-cropped and I think that is evident on the slightly dilute finish but otherwise, for a 48-year old Burgundy it still has pleasure to give. I just would not hold on to bottles much longer. Tasted at the Roumier vertical in London.
