The 1982 Côte Rôtie La Landonne is fully mature, but blossoms with time in the glass and is certainly not over the hill. Cured meats, spice, dried flowers, and layers of sweet Syrah meatiness all flow to a full-bodied, silky, sweetly fruited beauty that has an almost La Mouline-like sexiness. It’s not going to get better and I would drink bottles over the coming decade.

For such a precocious vintage, the 1982 La Landonne remains a backward, beefy, smoky, chewy mouthful of tannic wine. It has thrown a huge amount of sediment, and the bottle is completely stained, as if it were a 15-year-old vintage port. The wine reveals an olive, earthy, licorice, mineral, smoked-meat nose, fabulous depth, and a huge, formidably endowed personality. It is a monstrous, super concentrated wine that should reach its apogee by the turn of the century. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2025. Last tasted 12/95.

More evolved than the 1983 to look at. Very rich, supple, chunky, classic Côte-Rôtie start then astringent finish. Spicy flavours. A little tough at the end. Maybe a bad bottle? (JR)
