Score 95-97/100 · Drink 2028-2065, Neal Martin, Dec 2021

The 2020 Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru, which contains 70% whole bunch, has a flamboyant, pure and sensual bouquet with very floral violet and peony aromas complementing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, demonstrating a touch more precision than the Clos Saint-Denis though sharing that saline/marine influence finish. There is just a little more pixelation here. This oozes class.

(from a .74 ha holding). A slightly riper and equally expressive nose offers up its aromas of wild black cherry, poached plum, dark currant compote, violet, earth and a subtle gamy character. The rich, delicious and enveloping broad-shouldered flavors also possess a seductive texture along with notably more power on the sappy, hugely long and compact finish that is more firmly structured. This is also going to need extended patience, but it should be more than worth the wait. (93-95)/2035+
