The first vintage for the Jaboulets in this appellation, the 2006 Cornas is well into full-on maturity. It's brick in hue, with dominant notes of leather and cigar box. There's a bit of aged sweetness hanging on, along with softly dusty tannins. Drink up.

Inky ruby. Powerful scents of blackcurrant, smoked meat, graphite and tobacco, with slow-mounting florality and a kiss of black pepper. This is textbook northern Rhone syrah. Fleshy but youthfully firm, displaying deep dark fruit and bitter chocolate flavors and dusty tannins. A salty note of olive tapenade gains strength on the broad, spicy finish, which offers good clarity and impressive length.
