The 2012 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Les Charrieres has more fruite and delineation than the village cru, with bright redcurrant and fresh strawberry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded, quite fleshy entry. The acidity is nicely marked with a touch of spice furnishing the finish. Fine – though there are just 2½ barrels this year. Way up in the snowy Hautes Cotes, just 4km away from Vosne-Romanee, you could be in a completely different world. Tranquil, silent even, all you can here is the breeze. But here in the village of Concoeur is Herve Murat who started his domaine back in 2005 with 1.5 hectares of vine planted by his grandfather in the 1950s, having previously worked with Anne-Francoise Gros and Comte Senard. “It was not easy,” he says with candor, but he has strived and expanded to four hectares since taking over his father and grandfather’s holdings, including 3.3 hectares in the Haute Cotes de Nuits. The 2012 was the first vintage in his new building in the village. These are commendable wine, well priced and well-crafted. Importer: Fass Selections (www.fassselections.com) and AB Vintners in the UK.
