Bright violet. Ripe black and blue fruits on the deeply perfumed nose. Broad and fleshy in the mouth, showing good spicy lift and a hint of smokiness to the sappy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors. A licorice nuance appears on the clinging finish, which features slow-building tannins and repeating smokiness.

A rockin' value that over-delivers at the price, the 2013 Crozes-Ermitage Le Grand Courtil comes from a single lieu-dit located next to the Rhone river, in the western edge of the appellation. Aged all in demi-muids, it’s medium-bodied, pure and finesse-driven with a sheen of high quality oak in its cassis, pepper, and crushed violet aromas and flavors. It has the balance and underlying tannic structure to evolve gracefully for a decade.
(made from grapes grown in a limestone-rich vineyard in Mercurol): Bright purple. Potent smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of fresh dark berries, pipe tobacco and violet. Gently sweet blackberry and licorice flavors are lifted by juicy acidity, picking up spiciness with air. Closes taut and smoky, with supple tannins coming in stealthily.
