Score 89/100 · Drink 2025-2042, Neal Martin, Nov 2022

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has layers of ripe wild strawberry and raspberry fruit on the nose. A little gregarious compared to its peers, just missing the same degree of delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit on the entry, gentle grip, good backbone but quite linear and correct. It attenuates a little towards the finish that exhibits some hardness at present, possibly due to reduction. Give it another couple of years - a bit bolshie. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

With no new oak and 100% whole cluster from 80-year-old vines, the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a very well-defined bouquet, a little dominated by the stems at the moment, but I suspect they will be assimilated with time in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Gentle and unassuming in some ways, but you can feel that length on the finish. Superb.
