Score 90-92/100 · Drink 2002-2010, Pierre Rovani, Jun 1997

Medium-to-dark ruby-colored, the Gevrey-Chambertin Les Combottes is packed with intense spice, cinnamon and black currant aromas. It possesses layers of beautiful, ripe, deep berry fruit. Complex, extracted, and thickly-textured, this fabulous wine will drink well between 2002-2010. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. The wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. Pinot Noir, a fragile varietal, reacts poorly to fining, filtration, and careless bottling techniques, I recommend caution when considering buying a red burgundy based on cask samples. I called it as I tasted it, and hope the bottled wine reflects the quality of the samples I was provided. Importer: Neal Rosenthal, Select Vineyards, Shekomeko, NY; tel. (800) 910-1990.

Very good dark red. Sappy, perfumed, precise nose offers bitter cherry and coffee notes. Lush, fat and very concentrated; broad but nicely filled in. Lively, harmonious acidity gives the flavors excellent thrust. Palate-staining but rather tannic finish. This was much easier to taste prior to the bottling. But clearly outstanding.
