Score 95/100 · Drink 2022-2035, Josh Raynolds, Dec 2020

The almost mature 1995 Clape Cornas offers up a highly complex bouquet that evokes ripe red/dark fruits, exotic spices and potpourri, with olive and smoked meat notes in the background. Appealingly sweet and well-concentrated, it shows powerful cassis, cherry preserve and fruitcake flavors that are enlivened by an undercurrent of juicy acidity. While there are still some fine-grained tannins present, they are not easy to detect, making this an awfully appealing wine right now.

A candidate for the wine of the vintage, Clape's 1995 Cornas exhibits an opaque purple color, and a fabulously ripe, sweet nose of licorice, black plums, and cassis, followed by full-bodied, dense, concentrated, well-balanced flavors with nicely integrated acidity and tannin. This should be a 20-year wine. Importers: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel (510) 524-1524, and a Christopher Cannan Selection, Europvin USA, Watertown, MA; tel. (617) 924-7620
