Score 87/100 · Drink 2015-2020, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Jun 2015

The 2012 Clos St Denis has a placid bouquet, perhaps the most refined and cohesive of Frederic's 2012s, with fresh strawberry and raspberry scents interlaced with limestone and a touch of violet (rendering it more in style of a Clos-de-la-Roche.) The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins on the entry. There is a dense core of sultry black cherry and raspberry fruit, segueing into a masculine, slightly austere finish. This feels just a little taciturn and curmudgeonly compared to its peers.

Bright, dark red. Brilliantly precise nose combines red berries, rose petal, cardamom and crushed stone. Juicy, tart red berry and spice flavors are nonetheless ripe and pliant, offering terrific inner-mouth energy and an uncompromisingly primary quality. Youthfully imploded today but has the purity, intensity and penetrating character to evolve slowly and spectacularly.
