The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Fonteny offers up aromas of sweet cherries, plums and peony framed by toasty new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy palate with a pure and succulent core of fruit structured around youthfully chalky tannins.

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Fonteny 1er Cru comes from 0.8 hectares of vines planted between 1970 and 1989. This offers menthol-tinged red fruit, quite opulent in style with fine purity, handling the new oak better than the Village Crus. The palate is medium-bodied with a very supple, pure opening that manages to translate the grape variety with style. The back palate has a touch of warmth, detracting from the delineation and clarity. Nicely balanced overall - it just seeks a little more personality and soul. It fades a hint in the glass.

Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, this domaine has a long history and impressive vineyards (with over five hectares of Grand Cru), but has long been considered an under-performer. Today, however, the Bouygues brothers (of Montrose and Clos Rougeard) have taken ownership and change is afoot.
