A dark, brooding wine, the 2013 Chambertin is showing only the barest hint of its potential. The 75 % whole clusters are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the blue/purplish Chambertin fruit. The overall impression is compactness, density and raw power. I suspect the 2013 will require quite a bit of patience.

(70% vendange entier ): Deep, dark red. Medicinal, cool, slightly reduced aromas of black cherry and dark soil. Deep but youthfully tough and sullen today, showing a restrained sweetness to its dark fruit and spice flavors. Much tougher today than the RSV, finishing with brooding tannins that are going to need a long time to unwind. Hiding more than it's showing today but boasts great long-term potential.

The 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru has a more backward bouquet than the Romanee-Saint-Vivant '13 from Dujac at the moment, the fruit a little darker with blackberry and raspberry intertwined with stony notes. The palate is medium-bodied with a masculine structure, real backbone here with great precision and freshness on the finish and a long saline aftertaste. Excellent. Dec 2014, www.robertparker.com
