Score 91/100 · Drink 2021-2032, Neal Martin, Jan 2019

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a more generous bouquet compared directly with the Aux Etelois. Touches of tobacco infuse the red berry fruit, chalk dust and notes of peat that emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with effervescent red fruit on the entry, hints of orange rind and spices towards the rounded finish. Maybe I would have liked to see a little more grip, but this should drink well over the next decade.

Offering up appealing aromas of dark berries, rose petals, forest floor and coffee roast, the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques is medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with an attractively complete, enveloping profile, lovely purity of fruit and a bright line of acidity, concluding with a precise finish.
