here is a single barrel here of 2005 Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, a wine offering intense aromas and flavors of black raspberry, almond extract, flowers and charred meats. One senses a wealth of fine tannins in the mouth and yet the wine’s texture is silken. The palate staining finish here is indescribably deep, with an almost bitter severity of spice, mineral, floral, charred meat and black fruit concentration. It lacks the immediate sex appeal of this year’s Clos St.-Jacques but is, if anything, yet more concentrated, and certainly deserves to be set aside until it is at least 15 years old. Saturated, deep ruby-red. Noble, coolish aromas of black raspberry, minerals, smoked meat and flowers. Superconcentrated and strikingly primary, with powerful black fruit flavors hardened a bit by CO2 Finishes with a serious whiplash of flavor. The wine's major tannins will require a decade or more of patience. Laurent told me he only selects this wine in top years, like 1999.
